Where do I even begin telling you the amazing story of this sweet girl’s birth? When Vicky asked me months ago to photograph her home birth, I leapt at the opportunity because if you know me, you know that I am passionate about natural birth. But when my phone rang at 2am and I had to drive for an hour in the dark to get to her, reality quickly hit. Vix, one of my oldest friends, was having her baby and I got to be there.
Vicky was so brave and so strong, and she had the most amazing team of her midwife, Margreet, her doula, Juanita, and her husband, Brennan. After a few hours of active labour, Margreet broke her waters and things really picked up. The pain intensified but with loving and supportive hands and voices all around her, she quickly dilated and was ready to push. It was amazing to see her moving around to find the most comfortable position to labour in. When she was ready, she began to push, and slowly Eilah’s head emerged, and then with one more push, there she was. Because there was a bit of meconium in the amniotic fluid, Margreet quickly suctioned the fluid out of her mouth and nose, and then immediately passed her into her mother’s waiting arms.
She gave a little cry but so quickly settled onto her mother’s warm chest and fell asleep, content and comforted in the calm and loving presence of her home and those around her. The next few minutes were filled with cuddles, kisses, tears and a few stitches, but as soon as she latched and drank for the first time, all seemed right with the world.
What a privilege to have been there at such a special moment and capture it all for Vicky to look back on.
