You may have noticed that I haven't photographed a wedding in more than a year due to being a little occupied on the home front, so it was going to take something fairly spectacular to bring me out of hibernation.
A while back, my husband Cameron, a rock climbing guide, told me about a nice couple, Nigel and Andy, that he had guided up Table Mountain, but I didn't think much of it until Cameron told me that they were coming back to repeat the route they had climbed and get married on Table Mountain, and did he by any chance know a rock climbing wedding photographer? Well, funny you should ask! It turns out that the story is actually a little more complicated and special so I thought I would borrow Nigel's words to tell you more:
"Andy and I are rock climbing Table Mountain in our wedding gear, me in a bright pink tuxedo and Andy in her wedding dress :-) WHY........ ? Two years ago, on the same climb, on the last pitch, Andy's retina detached in her left eye, bearing in mind she has no eyesight in her right eye!! So Andy climbed effectively blind, terrifying, we were both in bits at the top afterwards. We got the flight home the next day and Andy was operated on the next day at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. Andy became registered fully blind. Andy and I both had a really tough time adjusting to our new reality, Andy was going through her white stick training and was adapting brilliantly, I went into a mild depression blaming myself. Andy typically was still wanting to carry on with our active lifestyle - I did not, just made lots of lousy excuses not to do anything. After a year Andy's eyesight started to improve in her left eye to being tunnel vision but still blind in her right eye. Andy has a very rare eye disease where the retinas are much thinner than usual, the surgeon repeatedly said that it could happen anytime whatsoever. About 9 months ago we decided to get back onto the horse and start living again and decided we wanted to go back and do the climb again and get married on top of Table Mountain to finish off the circle on a Positive :-) So wearing a pink tuxedo and wedding dress we are going to go for it!! We have trained hard and are stronger and more experienced than the last time we were here.
